LOUDONVILLE, NY - Siena Water Polo was selected to finish sixth in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll as announced by the league office Wednesday. Siena looks to new head coach Tamara Perea who is in her first year at the helm.
Four-time defending champion Wagner was selected as the preseason favorite with six first place votes. The Seahawks became the first MAAC water polo program to win a national postseason game since Iona in 2012 when they took down UC San Diego 6-5 in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Water Polo Championship. Marist was picked to finish second and received two first place votes after advancing to the MAAC Water Polo Championship game for the fourth-straight season last year.
Iona (46) was picked third followed by VMI (39) in fourth and Villanova (29) in fifth. Siena was selected sixth in the poll with 26 points and beat out St. Francis Brooklyn (20) and La Salle (8), who is in their second water polo season.
Siena will face all seven league teams twice during the regular season, including Villanova, Wagner, Marist and St. Francis Brooklyn all at the Siena Swim Center. The top four teams in the conference will advance to the 2018 MAAC Championship set to take place with the semifinals on Saturday, April 28 at the McCann Natatorium at Marist College. The Red Foxes host the Water Polo Championship for the 16th consecutive season.
The Saints ended the 2017 season with a 7-24 overall and 5-9 league record. Their five league wins is the most in Siena’s history, while their seven overall wins were the most since 2015. The Saints are set to begin their season at the Bison Invite in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania on February 10 when they take on George Washington and Saint Francis (PA).
