Siena Drops Pair to End Regular Season
April 15, 2012
Once again, the battle for a MAAC Tournament bid came down to the last day of the regular season for Siena water polo. However, unlike the 2010 season that ended in the postseason, the 2012 one was sunk with two losses to St. Francis (N.Y.) and Marist in Philadelphia, Pa.
The Saints (9-21, 4-8 MAAC) opened the day with a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to the Terriers. Senior Katie Ness tallied three goals and seven steals, while four other Saints scored in the losing effort and goalkeeper Madeline Hurley stopped seven shots.
Still, the Green and Gold had a chance at a MAAC Tournament bid if they could get past I-87 rival Marist. However, the Red Foxes ended Siena's season by dispatching the Saints 16-10. Senior Traci Robertson went out with a bang, totaling seven assists, four steals, and seven ejections drawn in a game played at a frantic pace. Ness scored four goals, Lea Allen added three, and Hurley had another solid game with 13 saves.
The Saints graduate Ness and Robertson, and will return 11 members of this year's roster next season.
