The Siena College women's water polo team captured their first win of the season this afternoon, defeating Utica College, 15-4. The Saints rounded out Saturday play with an 8-7 setback against Marist College in what proved to be a closely fought contest. Siena is now 1-6 on the season and 0-2 in MAAC play.
In game one, the Green and Gold jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one quarter of play, courtesy of Shanna Allen who put away four of her eventual seven tallies in the first seven minutes of action. Shanna Allen took over in the second, scoring four goals while Strein added yet another to give the Saints a 9-2 lead at the half.
In the third quarter of action, Allen and Strein split scoring responsibilities, netting two each. Anne LaFex put away a pair of goals in the fourth as Siena cruised to the 15-4 victory.
Sarah Detwiler and Rebecca McLeod each had two goals for Utica.
Jeanette Ogren made two saves in the net for Siena through three quarters of action while Julia Crouse had two stops in the fourth.
Tracey McConnelee recorded four saves for Utica.
In game two, Siena again took the lead in the first, going up 3-1 in the opening seven minutes of play. The Saints put away three more in the second while holding Marist to just one for a 6-3 halftime lead. Strein and Allen made up all of the Green and Gold's six points prior to the mid-way break, scoring three each.
The Red Foxes regained the lead by netting three goals in the third while holding the Saints scoreless for an 8-6 advantage entering the final seven-minute stanza. The Saints could only manage one tally, courtesy of Anne LaFex, as Marist held on for the 8-7 win.
Ogren was solid in the cage, making 16 stops for the Saints while Amanda Long had four saves for the Red Foxes.
Siena will next travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Sunday, April 4 for re-matches with both Utica and Marist. The Saints are set to face Utica at 1 p.m. and Marist at 4 p.m.
