Siena Captures First-Ever Win with 9-8 Victory Over Salem

The Siena College women's water polo team captured their first-ever win with a 9-8 victory over Salem at the Bucknell Invitational. The Saints went 1-3 through the two-day tournament, defeating Salem and falling to Villanova on day one before suffering setbacks against Georgewashington and host team Bucknell in the final day of action.

The Saints dropped their opening contest 15-6 to Villanova. The Wildcats scored seven unanswered goals in the first quarter before Siena finally got on the board on a goal by Erica Strein with 23 seconds left. Siena scored a total of two goals in the second while Villanova put away seven more for a 14-3 score at the half. The Saints netted one in each of the remaining two quarters while Villanova managed nine more tallies for a 15-6 final score. Strein had five of Siena's six goals.

Siena rebounded to claim their first-ever win with a 9-8 victory over Salem in game two. Salem jumped out to an early lead scoring three goals to Siena's one in the first quarter, but the Saints put away four second-quarter goals while limiting Salem to just one to tie the game up at five apiece going into halftime. The two teams traded goals in the third before Salem took a one-goal advantage with a tally at the 4:07 mark in the fourth. Strein scored the tying and game-winning goal for the Saints, giving Siena the 9-8 victory. Strein (5G) and Shanna Allen (4G) combined for all of Siena's goal scoring.

On day two the Saints failed to score a goal in the first game as they fell to Georgewashington 13-0. GW sprinted out to a 9-0 lead in the first and held off the Saints while netting five more goals to walk away with the victory.

Siena dropped their final contest of the afternoon to host team Bucknell, 14-4. Again pouring in strong perfomances for the Saints were Strein and Allen, who scored two goals apeice.



The Saints will next be in action on Saturday, March 29 when they travel to Iona. Game-time is set for 10:00 a.m.
