Freshmen accounted for four goals
March 2, 2013
Ten different Saints scored allowing Siena to ride an 8-0 first half run to an eventual 15-5 victory over the Utica Pioneers at the Siena Invite. It was the 11th straight victory for the Saints over the Pioneers dating back to 2005.
With the score tied at one in the first quarter, Lea Allen ignited an 8-0 run over the next 11 minutes to give Siena a lead that they will hold for the entire game. Jasmine Carrillo and Kimi Chavez would connect on goals in the next minute to fuel the sizeable run.
In the second stanza, Samantha Voelker capitalized on both 6-on-5 attempts for her first two collegiate goals.
A quick Pioneers 2-0 run to begin the third period cut the Saints lead to six, but a goal from Brianna Ritota, Stephanie Bundas, and two by Kimi Chavez would bring Siena's lead back to double-digits, a margin they would maintain for the 15-5 victory.
As a team, Siena shot 58 percent on the afternoon while recording 18 steals. Four different Siena players picked up three swipes on the defensive front. Stephanie Pouder started in goal and tallied three saves while Madeline Hurley recorded six.
Offensively, Chavez led the way with her first career hat trick and Carrillo added a team-high four assists.
The Saints will try to make it two in a row when they take part in the Hartwick Invitational and take on #18 Hartwick March 9, at 3 p.m.
