Middlebury, VT--The Siena women's water polo team lost to Dartmouth 14-3 and defeated Middlebury 11-6 during the second, and final, day of the Middlebury Invitational Sunday afternoon. The Saints stand 1-1 after the season's opening weekend.
In the second game against Middlebury, the contest was knotted at 3-3 at halftime, but Siena scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter to go up 7-3. The Saints attacked on four more scores in the final period, while holding the Panthers to just three goals en route to its first 11-6 victory of the weekend.
"After the initial quarter, I was really happy with how the team locked Middlebury down defensively using those valuable lessons from the Dartmouth game", said head coach Rob Swingle.
Playing very unselfishly, Siena assisted on nine of its 11 goals. Smith and Kaedy Graves had three apiece, while teammates Anne LaFex, Allen and Jeannette Ogren had one. Graves stopped three breakaways in the contest.
In the opener against Dartmouth, a team Siena has never played, the Big Green held the Saints scoreless in the first half. The two teams went into halftime with Dartmouth leading 6-0, but Siena added one goal in the third quarter, and two more in the fourth for a dismal 14-3 loss. "Dartmouth played their usual hard pressing defense which really threw our young players for a loop. We lost the individual battles at each position offensively early in the game which was tough to try to recover from", said Swingle.
Graves started in goal and made nine saves against Dartmouth.
Siena returns to action March 5th, when they travel to Oneonta, NY. The team is scheduled to play three games, Utica at 11 a.m., Queens at 3:30 p.m. and Hartwick at 7:45 p.m.
Goals: Smith (7), Allen (4)
