LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena cross country senior Sydney Sericolo and volleyball senior libero Kalehua Katagiri have been named Siena College’s Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month for November. The two are being honored for their success on the field and in the classroom.
“Sydney is a relentlessly hard worker and her passion for the team and her personal improvement is second to none,” said cross country head coach John Kenworthy.
This season the Valatie, New York native finished in the top 55 of all four meets she competed. At the MAAC Championship she finished 50th overall in 23:32.2 in the 6K to help the women’s side with their seventh place team finish. She competed in one 5K at the UAlbany Invitational where she came through at 19:10.8. She has a season best finish of 22:51.5 at the Paul Short Invitational in the 6K.
Sericolo holds a 3.8 GPA in English. She is a member of the Siena’s 4.0 Club for finishing the 2015 or 2016 semester with a 4.0 GPA. Sericiolo also is a Sigma Tau Delta for the English Honor Society. She completed a combination of Honors courses, service activities and a culminating honors thesis. Sericolo has also been named to the MAAC All-Academic Team three times in her academic career for the cross country team.
“Hua is one of the most amazing athletes I have ever had,” said volleyball head coach Garvey Pierre. “The numbers show that by far she is the best libero in the conference and I truly believe that Kalehua can play at any level. I would be happy to see Hua playing pro for a couple of years. She has the passion, character and work ethics to excel at any level.”
The Kaneohe, Hawaii native was named to the MAAC second team after at the end of the season. Katagiri led the MAAC in both digs and digs per set this season. After the MAAC Tournament, Katagiri was named to the All-Tournament Team. She recorded 31 digs against Fairfield, who went on claim the 2016 MAAC Tournament Champions and in turn advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Katagiri boasts a 3.87 GPA in Psychology. She is a member of Siena’s 4.0 Club for finishing the 2015 or 2016 semester with a 4.0 GPA. She was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team for her efforts in the classroom.
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
