Each of Siena's four MAAC Championships under coach Garvey Pierre has had one constant: Wins over Fairfield in MAAC Tournament play. The Saints will look to repeat history this weekend, as the first step to a potential MAAC title is a semifinal matchup with the second-seeded Stags at 4 p.m. at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.
You can follow the Green and Gold's quest for a ninth conference title in may different ways. Links to video coverage on MAAC TV and a live blog right here on SienaSaints.com are available above, as are live stats that are updated after every point.
The Saints come in red-hot, having won nine of their last 10 league matches to clinch the tournament's #3 seed. They're led by recently-crowned MAAC honorees Taylor Akana (Offensive Player of the Year, All-MAAC First Team), Lesli Akeo (Co-Defensive Player of the Year), and Jacqueline Skeen (All-Rookie Team), and the Saints are the only team in the MAAC to knock off two-time defending champion Niagara this season.
However, two of their seven conference losses in 2011 have been heartbreaking defeats at the hands of Fairfield. On September 25, the Saints held a 2-0 lead at home, but allowed the Stags to take the last three sets and escape with a 3-2 win. Their second matchup was a 3-1 decision, but one that featured three sets decided by just two points.
The winner of this semifinal will go on to play the winner of the Niagara-Canisius semi on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
