The Siena volleyball team learned a lot about itself during a rigorous non-conference schedule to start the year. Perhaps the biggest takeaway was the emergence of freshman setter Haley Howell who was named MAAC Rookie of the Week Monday.
Howell played solid volleyball against three of the top programs in the country, averaging 6.3 assists, 2.1 digs and .4 blocks per set while hitting .500 from her setter post in the Texas A&M Invitational.
She had 22 assists, six digs and killed three of her five attacks in a 3-0 loss to the host Aggies. Against #16 Florida State, Howell had 17 assists, an ace and five digs. She rounded out the weekend by killing both her attacks and dishing out 18 assists against No. 7 Michigan.
Howell and the Saints lost all three matches in straight sets, but hung tough, nearly stealing a set against Texas A&M (25-23) and reaching at least 17 points twice against both Florida State and Michigan.
Howell and the Saints (1-8) will find out if the early season challenges pay dividends when they travel to face Binghamton Tuesday night. Their home and MAAC season opens Saturday at 1 p.m. against Iona.
