Head coach Garvey Pierre has named Hawaiians Taylor Akana and Lesli Akeo team captains for the 2012 season. Akana was the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore last season, and Akeo, a senior libero, was the league's co-Defensive Player of the Year.
"Lesli and Taylor both play with a lot of maturity and leadership," Pierre said. "We are counting on them to produce on and off the court."
Akana has led the MAAC in kills in each of her first two seasons at Siena. She enters her junior season with 888 kills, and has started all 56 matches in her career.
"Taylor has improved her passing and defense a lot," Pierre said. "We have worked on cutting down errors as well, and that will be a key this year. She understands what is expected of her."
Akeo is already the school's all-time digs leader, entering her final season with 1,497 digs. She has also posted a .946 reception percentage in her three years with the program.
"Lesli is one of the best players Siena volleyball has ever had," Pierre said. "She is very confident, and clearly one of the top passers in the league."
Both players have excelled off the court as well. Akeo carries a 3.72 grade point average in management, and Akana, a marketing major, posted a perfect 4.0 in the fall, raising her GPA to 3.8.
