For the first time since 2008, the Siena Saints will be playing for the championship. Second seeded Siena defeated No. 3 Canisius 3-1 (25-22, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20) in the semi-finals at Alumni Hall.
Once again the Saints (21-10, 15-4 MAAC) were led by Taylor Akana who had 26 kills and hit .224% while also picking up 11 digs.
Jacqueline Skeen also had a good match amassing 14 kills on a .385 hitting percentage.
The two teams played even in the first set with the score tied at 18-18. Colleen Ahearn ignited a 5-1 rally with a kill, one of her 11 on the day. Canisius (16-13, 13-6 MAAC) would come closer but a Skeen kill would close out the set with the Saints taking a 25-22 victory.
It was all Siena in the second set behind the serving of Meghann Wright. The redshirt freshman had four service aces in the set, and the Saints would finish with 10 aces against the best service reception team in the MAAC.
After Canisius took the third set, Siena only trailed once in the fourth before finishing with a kill from Akana to take the match.
Siena will meet regular season champion and host Fairfield in the MAAC Finals tomorrow afternoon. The Saints and Stags met in the finals every season from 2005-08, with the Saints taking all four. Siena is 8-0 all-time in MAAC Championship matches with six wins over Fairfield.
