Four Manhattan players tallied at least nine kills and the Jaspoers held off a late Siena rally to advance to the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Championships Sunday evening in Orlando, Fla. Lauren Weber led all players with 14 kills in a losing effort for the Saints.
After spotting the Jaspers a 14-2 lead in the first game, the Saints settled down and played fairly even with the 28-2 MAAC regular-season champs. The Jaspers took the first game 30-18 and earned a 30-20 win in the second. In the decisive third game, the teams exchanged points in an entertaining contest that needed more than 30 points to decide its winner. Siena actually held the first game point, and then held off several Manhattan match points before succombing 33-31.
Seniors Marissa Gregg and Jennifer Corkum each had seven kills for the Saints. Libero Amanda Carrk added a team-best 10 kills. The Saints fall to 8-21 on the season and drop into the consolation bracket of the 2002 Championships after defeating #8 Marist earlier today.
Siena will take on Rider Monday morning at 10 a.m. The Jaspers advance to the semifinals where they will face Loyola.
