Crystal Vasquez registered 15 kills and three blocks to lead Iona (22-9/8-1 MAAC) to a 3-0 victory over Siena (7-19/2-7) in the Saints' penultimate regular-season match in Loudonville Sunday afternoon. Lauren Weber led all players with 18 kills and 20 digs in a losing effort for the Saints.
The Gaels prevailed in all three games despite being pushed hard by the upset-minded Saints. Iona held on for a 30-27 in the first game after trailing early on. The Gaels rallied to take the second game 30-26, and prevailed for a victory of the same score in the decisive third game.
Iona out-blocked the Saints 20-7, but Siena equaled the Gales in total digs with 53. The setters for each team also recorded 32 assists apiece, further testimony to the closeness of the match. Senior Kerrie McHugh did the honors for the Saints in her final home game. Classmates Marissa Gregg and Jennifer Corkum contributed 13 kills to close out their home careers.
Kathleen Owen and Kathy Kunath added 19 kills and 16 digs to Iona's effort. Jennifer Hoyan killed seven of her nine attempts (.778) for the victors.
Junior Katie Sarkovics picked up 11 digs for the Saints.
Siena returns to action on Tuesday at Albany in its final regular-season match of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The Saints will participate in the MAAC Championship at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex beginning a week from today.
