The Siena volleyball team has been doing a lot of things right the last few weeks. Wednesday night's performance at crosstown rival UAlbany was not one of them. The Danes humbled the Saints 3-0 (25-10, 25-15 and 25-16) in a match televised throughout the Capital Region on Time Warner Cable Sports.
It was the 10th straight win for UAlbany in the rivalry, dating back to Siena's 3-1 victory on September 10, 2001. The two teams have played every year since then with the exception of last season. This was the second time Siena and UAlbany played this year. UAlbany won a more competitive 3-1 decision in the Fordham's Rose Hill Classic on September 10 of this year.
The loss snapped Siena's six-match win streak.
On Wednesday night, Siena's offense never got going. The team posted a -.038 hitting percentage for the match, and committed eight service errors. The Saints' 38 combined errors accounted for more than half of UAlbany's points.
No player for either team managed more than seven kills. Jacqueline Skeen and Taylor Akana recorded seven for the Saints, while Dunja Prgomet led the Danes with seven.
Siena's Lesli Akeo and UAlbany's Laurie Gonzales tied for match-high in digs with 13. UAlbany had nine team blocks, and Siena held Siena without a single rejection.
Siena's miscues were the difference in the match. UAlbany had 30 kills and Siena 26, but the Danes committed just seven attack errors compared to Siena's 30.
The Saints hope to get back on track against two-time defending MAAC Champion Niagara Saturday in Lewiston.
