Siena battled back from a 2-0 deficit Wednesday evening to pull out a dramatic 3-2 victory over the homestanding Iona Gaels in MAAC volleyball action. Juniors Jennifer Corkum and Marissa Gregg paced a strong performance by the Saints' offense.
By virtue of the victory, the Saints improved to a perfect 6-0 in MAAC play, taking another step toward a berth in their 10th consecutive MAAC Championships. The Championships, which this year return to Siena's Alumni Recreation Center November 17-18, comprise the conference's top four finishers.
On this night the Gaels (3-5 MAAC) put a scare into the Saints, taking the first two games of the match, 30-28 and 31-29. Siena responded with a convincing 30-15 win in game three and a 30-26 triumph in the fourth to force the deciding fifth game. In the fifth game, Siena crusied to a 15-8 win.
Corkum led the Siena offense with 20 kills, connecting on 34% of her attempts. Gregg chipped in with 14 kills and a game-high .462 hitting percentage. Sophomore Lauren Weber added 17 kills and 20 digs for the victors, while freshman Diana Wierzba tallied a double-double with 10 kills and 23 digs.
The Saints return to action Nov. 3 at Fairfield.
