Crystal Vasquez and Megan Dailey combined for 45 kills helping Iona hold off a spirited Siena effort 3-2 in Loudonville Saturday. Christie Gustafson led an otherwise balanced Siena attack with 22 kills.
The two teams traded game victories, with Iona earning a 30-24 victory in game one. Siena rallied for a dramatic 30-28 win in the second game, but Iona appeared to seize control of the match with a 30-21 triumph in game three. The Saints, however, found an answer in the fourth game, rallying for a 30-26 win. Iona won the decisive fifth game 16-14.
Siena remained on even terms with the MAAC leaders by playing its most consistent volleyball of the season. Setter Jessica Hackett collected 51 assists distributing the ball evenly between the outside and the middle all afternoon. Freshman Jeanine Pesusich killed eight of 14 attempts and Liz Hubbard finished eight of her 18 attacks to solidify Siena's middle.
Gustafson, Hubbard and junior Amy Christensen, who was second on the team with nine kills, all served very effectively as well for the home team.
Iona found the answer with strong defensive play throughout the match. Libero Chelsea White had 24 digs and Emily Mansur and Mike Hugg combined to post 25 blocks to pace the Gaels.
Siena returns to MAAC action tomorrow afternoon as they host Fairfield at 3 p.m.
