LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore Lauren Weber killed 22 of 48 attacks and tallied a game-high 22 defensive digs and three service aces in leading Siena (15-6/5-0 MAAC) to a five game victory over Niagara University (6-7/2-1) in a MAAC volleyball match played in Loudonville Sunday afternoon.
The Purple Eagles took the first game 30-28, holding off a late Siena charge. Valerie Arone notched one of her team-high 16 kills on the game's deciding point to preserve the victory.
The Saints rallied to take games two and three indecisive fashion, 30-17 and 30-14. Freshman Diana Wierzba was solid all afternoon, and finished with 13 kills and 10 digs. Middle hitters Jennifer Corkum and Marissa Gregg combined for 18 kills in 47 attempts in a winning effort.
Niagara bounced back to force fifth game with a 30-24 win in the fourth. The Purple Eagle built several double-digit advantages and again held off a late Siena charge en route to a 30-24 triumph.
The fifth game was all Siena as senior Allison McCourt held serve five times to break an early tie and give the Saints an insurmountable edge. McCourt ended with two service aces in the decisive game.
Siena sits atop the MAAC with a perfect 5-0 mark after defeating one of the league's two other unbeatens this afternoon.
The Saints return to action on Wednesday at St. John's.
