Burgandy McCurty's 28 kills and 11 digs helped Siena fend off Manhattan 3-2 in Riverdale Sunday afternoon. With the win, Siena evened its record for the first time this season and moved to 8-2 in league play.
The Saints (10-10) won the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-19, but Manhattan took sets three and four 25-22 and 28-26 to force a decisive fifth set. The Saints dominated play in set five, earning a 15-8 decision.
The momentum turned when Manhattan was penalized four points after returning late from the 10 minute intermission between sets two and three. The Saints could not capitalize on the advantage, and Manhattan gained momentum by rallying to get on the board with a 25-22 win in the third set.
McCurty was joined in double figure kills by senior captain Kelly Hummel who had 16. The Saints were efficient on offense, posting a .285 hitting percentage compared to Manhattan's .194.
Libero Aimee Gosse paced Siena's defense with 16 digs. Setter April London had 12 digs to go along with her 52 assists. Amanda Begin joined McCurty with 11 digs.
Sherryta Stokes had 14 kills and 15 digs for Manhattan. Rita Welsh led the Jaspers with 16 kills, Jaci Rahey had 15 and Jackie Kapovich added 10.
The Saints return to action Tuesday night at home against Syracuse. Time Warner Cable will televise the game through Upstate New York.
