Junior Erin Graham had a match-high 24 kills to help the Niagara University volleyball team (3-13, 1-0) win its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener with a 31-29, 19-30, 30-20, 28-30, 15-11 win Saturday over Siena (7-10/1-1 MAAC) at the Gallagher Center on the Monteagle Ridge campus.
Joining Graham in double digits in kills was junior Michelle LeSouder with 19. Junior Micole Daluisio (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) had a match-high 26 digs. Niagara's block was effective with 11 team blocks. Sophomore Annie Wachob (Buffalo, N.Y./Mount St. Mary's) had a solo and five assists and junior Karen Simpson had five assists.
Siena was led by Christie Gustafson and Nadiege Honore with 15 kills each. Four Saints were in double digits in digs, led by Amy Christensen and Diana Wierzba with 15 each.
Niagara hit .170 with 63 kills on 178 attempts. The Purple Eagles also had 74 digs. Siena hit .146 and dug 73 attacks.
The match came down to the game five and Niagara trailed 4-2 early. The Purple Eagles took advantage of a Siena service error and Wachob and sophomore Jessica Piscitelli had a block before a Saints' kill. A Graham kill tied the game at 5-5 and a LeSouder kill gave Niagara the lead for good. Graham had a kill to end the match and give the Purple Eagles the conference win.
