The Siena volleyball team dominated St. Francis in a 3-0 sweep Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Recreational Center court of the Marcelle Athletic Complex. Siena, who won 30-25, 30-28, 30-22, improves to 7-8 overall and 1-0 in the Metro Athletic Association Conference with its four straight game win streak over the Terriers (1-16, 0-0 NEC).
Siena opened game one in dominating fashion, hitting .109 to .056 for St. Francis. St. Francis had just seven kills compared to 19 for the Saints in the opening game, with Siena sophomore Christie Gustafson downing five kills, she set the pace for the Saints with six straight kills for a for a 10-4 Siena lead in game one.
Game two was much closer, with the Saints lineup changing, after a couple of blocks by St. Francis, Siena held a two point advantage, as the Terriers would not give up. Then with a block solo by Nadiege Honore and one of Diana Wierzba match-high three service aces, Siena went up 28-26. Gustafson then hammered down the game-winning kill after two St. Francis errors. Siena hit just .205 in the second game, but St. Francis hit .156, each downing 15 kills respectively.
The third game was another tight match; with Siena first pulling even at nine apiece before one of Malgorzata Szyszka team high 12 kills gave St. Francis 10-9 lead. Siena answered back when Liz Hubbard downed a kill to knot the game again, but a St. Francis service error combined with an attack error gave Siena a 13-11 lead it would not relinquish. Siena won game three, 30-22.
The Terriers had a negative hitting percentage in the last game thanks to Siena's aggressive blocking. Gustafson (16 kills, 21 digs) recorded a double-double while teammate Wierzba added 10 digs and nine kills. Senior setter, Abbie Maciolek recorded 39 set assist.
Siena will look to defend their home court as they welcome Binghamton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
