Siena scored the final five points of the decisive fifth set, finishing up a tough MAAC road weekend with a key 3-2 (27-25, 17-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 15-9) victory at Iona late Sunday afternoon in New Rochelle. Sophomore Jacqueline Skeen enjoyed one of her top matches of the season, posting a match-high 17 kills.
The Saints out-killed Iona 66-53, but had 29 attack errors and 12 serving errors.
Libero Lesli Akeo joined the 30-dig club for the fifth time this season, tallying 34 digs.
Siena led the first set 20-16 before Iona reeled off four straight points. The Gaels had a set point, leading 25-24, but Skeen finished a kill to spark a 3-0 run to give the Saints an early advantage. Iona dominated the second set 25-17, but Siena regrouped after intermission and posted a comfortable 25-22 win in the third. The fourth set was tied at 23-23 before Iona scored two straight to force the fifth.
Setter Sarah Sivertson had 60 assists and distributed the ball evenly all afternoon. In addition to Skeen, Rachel Stoklosa (15), Colleen Ahearn (12) and Taylor Akana (11) each had 10 or more kills. Stoklosa added 12 digs to round out a double-double.
Senior Amanda Sawlsville got into the act as well, tallying eight kills and 18 digs.
Catrina Warren topped Iona with 13 kills. Theresa Harvey led all players with 35 digs.
Siena returns home next weekend to take on Loyola and Rider before finishing the season series with the Gaels Wednesday, October 17 at the ARC.
