The Siena College women's volleyball team began MAAC play with a dramatic 3-2 win over Marist in Poughkeepsie Wednesday night. The Saints won the final two games for the second straight match to improve to 6-8 on the season and 1-0 in MAAC play.
Marist took the early lead, with a 30-23 victory in game one, hitting a match-high .303 as a team. The Saints battled back in game two to take the 30-21 win, but Marist came back to take a 30-24 victory in game three. Siena controlled the rest of the match, winning game four, 30-25 and taking the decisive game five, 15-13, powered by the serving efforts of Liz Hubbard.
Marist was led by sophomore Sally Hanson, who recorded 15 kills and seven blocks and freshman Christy Lukes, who hit a powerful .632 on 13 kills.
The Saints were paced by Christe Gustafson who recorded a double-double with 26 kills and 15 digs. She was joined in double figure kills by Janine Pesusich. Hubbard also tallied eight service aces on the day, along with four blocks.
Siena returns home to take on St. Francis on Saturday and Binghamton Sunday.
