LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - In a fourth game for the ages, the Saints (11-4) fought off four game points en route to an upset triumph over Big East foe Villanova (5-8) in Loudonville Friday evening. Sarah Watkins and Julie Mazza rejected a Kerri Sullivan attack to break Villanova's serve and account for the match deciding point.
The Saints jumped out to a two game advantage playing their best volleyball of the season. Lauren Weber (Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot), who finished with a team-best 19 kills and 19 digs, was on top of her game in 30-23 and 30-25 victories.
The Wildcats clawed back to take the third game in decisive fashion, 30-21. Leah Matthews recorded 15 kills to pace the visitors. Sullivan and Dana Jones added 10 terminations in defeat.
The fourth game was tight and action-packed throughout. Jennifer Corkum (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) played big late in the match and ended the contest with 11 kills and four blocks. Freshman Diana Wierzba (Eden, N.Y./Eden) chipped in eight kills and 15 digs and was one of two Saints who played the entire match. Senior setter Sarah Watkins dictated the tempo nicely and accounted for 35 of Siena's 43 assists.
The win improves the Saints to 11-4 on the season and sets the stage for Tuesday's match with Big East rival Seton Hall in South Orange. Siena topped the Pirates in a thrilling five set match a year ago-the last victory by a Siena team over a Big East opponent until today.
