The Saints started the weekend on a positive note with a 3-0 victory over Vermont in the first round of the Dartmouth Invitational on Friday night. Things took a turn for the worse on Saturday, however, as the Green and Gold lost for the first time in three week, dropping consecutive matches to Central Connecticut and Dartmouth.
Junior Jennifer Corkum killed 11 of 23 attempts and freshman Diana Wierzba chipped in 10 kills en route to the easy (30-23, 30-19, 30-15 win). Sophomore Katie Sarkovics added eight kills and senior setter Srarah Watkins had 33 assists in the straight-game victory. The Saints also amassed 15 service aces--an area in which they have dominated opponents this year.
On Saturday, the Saints dropped two hard fought matches. In the opener, Central Connecticut rallied after losing the first game to take the next three (26-30, 30-26, 30-25, 30-26). Watkins compiled 41 assists and sophomore Kerry Pease recorded a team-high 16 kills in defeat.
In the weekend finale, Dartmouth, the eventual Tournament Champion, defeated Siena 30-16, 30-27 and 30-27. Corkum and Sarkovics were again the offensive stars for the Green and Gold tallying 12 and nine kills respectively.
