Freshman setter Haley Howell handed out 32 assists to five different Saints and killed all four of her attacks helping the Siena volleyball team cap off a winning weekend with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17 and 25-11) sweep of Manhattan Sunday in the ARC. It was the team's 10th straight home win.
After trailing Iona 2-1 Saturday, Siena finished the weekend by winning five straight sets and the team showed noticeable improvement. The culmination was a dominant 25-11 triumph in the final set Sunday over a Jaspers team that was picked fourth in the MAAC and won at Marist yesterday.
Taylor Akana led the way for the Saints with nine kills and added nine digs. She moved within a single kill of second place (Kristin May) on the school's all-time kill charts, upping her career total 1,463.
Howell distributed the ball evenly across the front row. Jacqueline Skeen ended with eight kills (six in the first set), Meghann Wright had seven kills, four aces and 11 digs, Rachel Stoklosa posted six kills in 10 attacks and Christina Monroe killed five of her 10 swings.
The Saints trailed 17-14 in the first set before closing on an 11-3 run behind the service of Howell and classmate Bobbi Lin Kalama. The second set was tied 14-14 when Siena went on another 11-3 run to take a 2-0 lead. Wright served the team to big lead in a third set that was never in doubt.
The Saints face an early season test Wednesday in Connecticut against defending champion and preseason MAAC favorite Fairfield.
