Taylor Akana had 19 kills including the match-winner and Siena dug deep to rally past Iona 3-2 (18-25, 29-27, 21-25, 25-23 and 15-13) in their home and MAAC opener Saturday in Loudonville.
The Saints trailed 2-1 in the match and 17-11 in the fourth set before rallying. Bobbi Lin Kalama and Rachel Stoklosa led Siena's fourth set comeback with aggressive serving. The Saints used a 4-0 run to take a 10-8 lead in the fifth set and then scored three straight points with the set tied 10-10 to take control.
Catrina Warren led all players with 23 kills, and rounded out a double-double with 10 digs for Iona.
The Saints got a career-high 17 kills from sophomore Meghann Wright. Jacqueline Skeen had 13 kills and Stoklosa added 10. Freshman setter Haley Howell posted a career-best 59 assists and added 12 digs to join Akana with a double-double. Freshman libero Bobbi Lin Kalama led all players with 18 digs.
Siena nearly gave up a big lead in the second set, but they fought off three set points to even the match behind Wright's service.
The Saints extended their home court win streak to nine matches dating back to last season. They try to run the streak to 10 tomorrow against Manhattan.
