Hartford (3-8) erased a 2-1 deficit with consecutive victories in games four and five to fight past Siena (1-9) 3-2 in a non-conference match played at Siena's Alumni Recreation Center late Saturday afternoon. Stephanie Volckers led the visitors with 23 kills and 20 digs, while Siena's Lauren Weber had game-highs in both categories with 27 and 23 respectively.
The Saints bounced out to a 1-0 lead with a 30-25 victory in the first game and seemed on their way to taking a 2-0 lead before Hartford surged past Siena late to take the second game 30-28. The back-and-forth match continued its predictable pattern as the Saints took game three 30-25. Hartford responded with another two-point win in game four, needing 31 points to force the decisive fifth game. The Hawks controlled the action from the start in game five, earning an easy 15-10 win.
Freshman Christie Gustafson landed 14 kills and sophomore Amy Christensen had 10 in a losing effort for the Saints. Freshman setter Katie Borrett played well, collecting 54 assists and 13 digs and defensive specialist Diana Wierzba came off the bench to contribute 14 digs to the Saints stubborn back row.
Brianne Paulson notched 46 assists for Hartford and Erin Bailey recorded 12 digs and six blocks.
Siena returns to action Wednesday evening at Farleigh Dickinson.
