Siena Defeats Albany in Volleyball Rivalry

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - MAAC Rookie of the Week Diana Wierzba (Eden, N.Y./Eden) paced Siena's offensive attack Monday evening in a 3-1 home victory over the University at Albany. The Saints took the first two games 30-25 and 30-20 before the Great Danes battled back to win the third 30-27. Siena won the fourth and deciding game in convincing fashion, 30-17.
Wierzba, who earlier in the day was honored with the MAAC's initial Rookie of the Week award, killed 18 of 36 attempts (44%) and collected eight digs. Junior Jennifer Corkum (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) added 16 kills and sophomore Lauren Weber Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) had 13 in the victory. Senior Sarah Watkins (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) had 41 assists from her setter slot and notched five kills and a team-high 16 digs.
Junior Alissa Gibbs provided the offensive spark for the visitors with 15 kills. Freshman Hearst Fallon added 13 kills and a team-best 14 digs for the Great Danes.
Siena improves to 7-1 on the season after winning the Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook Invitational this past weekend. The Great Danes fall to 1-4 this season after a rigorous early season schedule.
The Saints return to action this weekend in Denver, Colo as they partake in the University of Denver Pioneer Classic.
