Stony Brook, NY -- - Siena College (6-1) posted straight games victories over Holy Cross (6-1) and Quinnipiac (1-4) and captured the 2001 Holiday Inn Express Volleyball Invitational at Stony Brook University Saturday. The Saints beat Stony Brook, 3-2, Friday night, posting a 3-0 mark in the tournament.
The Saints earned a four-game victory over Stony Brook Saturday, Holy Cross finished second, Stony Brook finished third and Quinnipiac was fourth.
The Saints were led by Sayville, NY native Laura Weber, who had 10 kills and 23 digs against Holy Cross and five kills and 20 digs against Quinnipiac. She was named to the All-Tournament team, along with senior setter Sarah Watkins (Canastota, NY), who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Watkins had 27 assists and 12 digs versus Quinnipiac and 33 assists and 11 digs against Holy Cross - helping the Saints end Holy Cross' six-game winning streak to open the season.
Holy Cross exceptionals Cheryl Jackielo (Wetherfield, CT) and Carissa Bennett (Easton, CT) were also named all-tournament. Jackielo posted a .629 hitting performance against Quinnipiac Friday night with 20 kills and just two errors in 29 attempts. She had 15 kills against Stony Brook Saturday. Bennett had 12 kills and four blocks versus Quinnipiac.
Stony Brooks Susanne Westing (Bellmore, NY) was the last line of defense for the Seawolves all weekend, collecting 15 digs against Siena and 16 each versus Holy Cross and Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac freshman setter Janka Lopatto (Haverhill, MA) was the sixth member on the team. She had 56 assists on Saturday in two matches.
