The Syracuse volleyball team defeated Siena, 3-0, on the first day of the Big Orange Tournament, Friday, Sept. 5. The Orangewomen (5-1) won the games, 30-28, 30-26 and 31-29. The Saints fell to 0-5 on the season with the hard-fought loss.
Junior Morgan Jones and sophomore Kelly Duan red the Orange attack with nine kills. Senior Christen Casey finished with 14 digs. Sophomore Aila Dommestrup had 16 assists, and senior Michaela Skelly recorded 14.
For the Saints, Lauren Weber had a match-high 14 kills on 21 attempts for a .524 hitting percentage, and had 20 digs. Katie Borrett recorded 39 assists.
In the first game of the tournament, Binghamton defeated Colgate in three games by scores of 30-17, 30-26 and 30-23. Jennifer Smith had 11 kills on 18 digs for a .556 hitting percentage, and recorded eight service aces. Ashley Meffert led the Bearcats with 31 assists. For the Raiders, Caity Whiteaker had nine kills on 17 attempts, and Marybeth Maziarz recorded a match-high nine digs.
The Big Orange Tournament continues tomorrow with Colgate vs. Siena at 11:00 a.m., Syracuse vs. Binghamton at 1:00 p.m., Siena vs. Binghamton at 5:00 p.m., and Syracuse vs. Colgate at 7:00 p.m. All matches are played in the Women's Building on SU's campus, and admission is free.
