Albany raced to a two game lead and held off a late Siena rally in a 3-1 non-conference volleyball victory in Loudonville Tuesday night. Ashley Green paced Albany's relentless attack with 15 kills and Ashlee Reed added 14 on just 21 attacks. Freshman Christie Gustafson led Siena's balanced attack with eight kills.
The Great Danes took the first game 30-24, riding the sharp serving of Eileen Nicole Rodriguez, who finished with six service aces, to five straight points midway through the game to break things open. Albany dominated play in the second game coasting to a 30-17 triumph behind DeNeal's hitting and a double-setter approach.
The lone bright spot for the Saints came in game three, when Siena took a commanding 21-13 lead before Rodriguez one seven straight points off her service to pull Albany within a single tally. The Great Danes would later take the lead, but Siena showed some character, battling back for a 30-28 win.
That would be the only highlight for the 185 Siena fans who turned out for the home season opener, as Albany left little doubt in the finale earning a 30-22 victory.
Ashley DeNeal rounded out the three Albany players by the same first name who finished in double-figures with kills. DeNeal added 10 to the cause and chipped in a game-high 13 assists.
Siena will be in action again this weekend as part of the Syracuse University Tournament. The Saints begin play Friday night against the host Orangewomen at 7 p.m.
