Saints split two games on final day including five-set victory over the hosting Red Raiders

Hamilton, N.Y.-The Siena volleyball team (3-1) has given Saints' faithful a lot to look forward to after an impressive opening weekend of matches in the annual Colgate Classic. On Saturday, the Saints defeated Colgate University in five sets after dropping a tight match to eventual Tournament champion Fordham University earlier in the day.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Weber concluded a fabulous individual tournament with 37 kills on 79 attempts in the Saints' two games. Fordham defeated the Saints 3-0 in the first match of the day-Siena's only loss of the two-day event. The Rams eked out 30-25 victories in each of the first two games before surviving for a 33-31 triumph in the deciding game. Weber led the offensive charge with 13 kills and classmate Katie Sarkovics and freshman Diana Wierzba contributed solid offensive efforts as well. Senior setter Sarah Watkins recorded 23 assists and seven defensive digs in defeat. Beth Crockett led Fordham's victorious endeavor with 14 kills and 12 digs.
In the Saints' second game, the Green and Gold stormed out to take a 2-0 lead over the hosting Red Radiers. Colgate, however, fought back to force a fifth game winning games three and four 30-25 and 30-16. Weber's 24 kills paced the Saints and junior middle hitter Jennifer Corkum contributed 16 kills in 38 attempts. Watkins was again solid as setter, tallying 46 assists and 12 digs in the five-game win. The victory gave the Saints a second place finish after a 3-1 tournament record. Siena had defeated UC-Riverside and UNC Greensboro in yesterday's first day of action.
The Saints return to the hardwood on Friday as they begin play in the Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook Tournament on Long Island.
