The Siena volleyball team displayed tremendous grit Friday in a 3-2 (25-20, 25-21, 30-32, 16-25 and 15-10) loss to undefeated Hofstra in the First Round of the Pride Invitational in Hempstead. The Saints battled back from a 2-0 deficit with a dramatic 32-30 win in the third set and a 25-16 triumph in the fourth to force a decisive fifth set.
Hofstra pulled out a 15-10 win in the fifth set to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Siena (2-4) used both its setters Friday, with Elizabeth Ives handling the duties in the Saints' dominant fourth set. Sarah Sivertson started and finished with 31 assists, 14 digs, and killed six of her 11 attacks.
Siena was very balanced on offense. Sophomore Rachel Stoklosa led the way with 15 kills, Taylor Akana played a solid match with 14 kills and 20 digs, and Colleen Ahearn collected 12 kills.
Libero Lesli Akeo joined the 30-dig club for the second time this season.
The Saints had no answer for Kelsie Wills who led all players with 27 kills and rounded out a double-double with 15 digs.
Siena completes play in the Tournament with matches against Princeton and Colgate.
