Meghan Matusiak had 15 kills and 12 digs to lead Seton Hall past Siena 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21) in the volleyball season opener for both schools Friday night in the Hofstra Invitational. Sophomores Burgandy McCurty and Brianne Bobo combined for 30 kills for the Saints.
Siena took the first set 25-20, but the Hall rallied to claim the next three, including a crucial 25-23 triumph in the third set.
The Saints received balanced contributions throughout their rotation. Kelly Hummel (11) and Amanda Begin (10) joined Bobo (12) and McCurty (18) with double digit kills, and setter April London had 45 assists and 16 digs.
Bobo also led all Siena players with 20 digs to round out the strongest outing of her career by far. The sophomore figures to play an expanded role in the absence of her sister Audrey, who is out of the rotation indefinitely with a shoulder injury.
In addition to the four players who posted double figure kills, four Saints chipped in double digit dig efforts. Kathi Kobayashi and Aimee Gosse collected 11 digs to join Bobo and London fortifying Siena's defensive efforts.
Siena will play Hofstra at 10 a.m. Saturday.
