Tennis junior Allysa Singh and water polo senior Stephanie Bundas are the March recipients of the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award. Both student athletes are enjoying exceptional seasons in their sports while performing at the highest level in the classroom.
Singh (Phoenix) carries a 14-3 singles mark this season, best on the team. She has split her time in dual matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, boasting a 6-1 record at both spots. Singh is yet to lose a conference match (3-0), and has been on fire this spring, winning seven straight matches while moving up in rotation to secure the No. 3 spot. Off the court, she holds a 3.44 GPA in computer science and is the team's Student Athlete Mentor representative. The Presidential Scholar was named to the 2014 MAAC All-Academic Team and the 2013 MAAC Second Team.
"I am excited and very proud for Allysa," Siena women's tennis coach Andy Christodoulou said. "She has stepped up her level of play and her performances have translated into some incredible wins and thrilling matches that I am fortunate to be part off. Her tennis game has matured and the confidence she is showing every time she steps on the court is evident no matter what the outcome is."
"We are so excited for Stephanie to receive this award," Siena water polo coach Ellen Howe said. "She has been a tremendous student and athlete for our team."
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
