The Siena Saints Women's Tennis Team saw their 5 match win streak come to an abrupt end this afternoon as the Bearcats of the University at Binghamton beat the Saints 6-1 in the fall season finale. The only bright spots for Siena was Nikki Mayer's 6-4, 6-3 win at #1 singles and Mayer and Denisa Hluchova's 8-3 victory at #1 doubles. While Mayer stayed undefeated at #1 singles, #2 Hluchova and #3 Rali Hristova saw their six match unbeaten streaks ended by the Bearcat's Amy Weissberg and Alexis Brill 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 4-6, (10-8) respectively.

Betsy Brookins and Brooke Fisher almost pulled an upset at #2 doubles. Brookins and Fisher, playing together for the first time since last fall, were leading 6-3 when Binghamton's Kristin Jobe and Amy Linden made a furious run to tie the match at 6-6. Brookins and Fisher then took the next game to go up 7-6 but quickly gave it back as the Binghamtom duo won the 14th game at love and then took the 15th game to go up 8-7. Though Binghamton had four match points in the 16th game, the Siena pair were able to fight them off until they pulled it out on the fifth duece of the game to send it into a tiebreaker. The Saint's pair was unable to keep the momentum going as they dropped the tiebreaker 7-4 and along with it, the doubles point.

"It was a tought way to end the season," Siena Head Coach Jeff Bloomberg said. "But maybe it was a blessing in disguise. Even though this team is vastly improved since it's season opening loss to Holy Cross, the women know now they still have work to do before the spring season begins. They're a dedicated group and I'm sure when April rolls around they will be even better than they were this fall."

Though the regular fall season is now completed, Nikki Mayer and Denisa Hluchova will be in action next weekend as they represent the Saints in both singles and doubles at the ITA East Regional Championships being held at Harvard University.
