Siena (4-1) held the top four singles spots for the second consecutive match en route to an easy 6-1 win over Wagner in Loudonville Tuesday afternoon. Nicole Mayer (Latham, N.Y.) continued her hot play, earning her fifth straight-set victory in five attempts this season.
Mayer defeated Jenny Luduigsen 6-1 and 6-1 at top singles, setting the stage for the rest of her teammates. Freshmen Ralitsa Hristova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Denisa Hluchova (Piestany, Slovakia) also won in straight sets at second and third singles respectively.
Lisha Tejada defeated Brooke Fisher 6-4 and 6-4 at fifth singles to register Wagner's only point.
The highlights of the afternoon were the two come-from-behind triumphs pulled off by Brookins and Slenkanp. Brookins, who lost the first set 6-2, settled down in the second to even the sets at 1-1 with a 6-3 win. In the tie break 3rd set, Brookins fell behind 6-4, but played flawless tennis from there on out to take the next six points and the set 10-6.
"I tried to hit with her in the first set," Brookins said after the match. "In the second set, I went back to my consistent lay and it made the difference. She began to make all the errors and the momentum changed in my favor. I lost my focus again in the beginning of the tiebreak set but quickly brought it back to take the last six points and the match"
The Saints won all three doubles matche to pick up the doubles point as well. The pairing of mayer and Hluchova shutout Wagner's Luduigsen and Gina Gelardo 8-0 at top doubles.
