Siena toughed out a shorthanded 4-3 win over Hartford at home Saturday. The Saints won the top three singles matches and the top two doubles contests.
"We started the match down 0-1 because we defaulted number six singles," head coach Andy Christodoulou. "Allysa, Maria and Cassie are unfortunately injured. We also defaulted number three doubles because of these injuries, but the team managed to dig in and find the strength and determination to win the first and second doubles to grab the important doubles point. From there we played very well in singles to add the other three points we needed for this victory."
Two of the three singles wins came from freshmen, as Ali Garrity posted a convincing 6-2 and 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and Mitsuki Fukamachi won 6-1 and 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
"Our freshmen have arrived and they showed everyone they are ready to play," Christodoulou said. "I believe they will only get better as the season goes on. It was a good win under difficult circumstances."
