Sept. 15, 2002
The Siena College Women's Tennis Team lost it's fall
season opener 4-3 to the homestanding Holy Cross Crusaders.
The Saints' loss of the doubles point was the deciding factor as the six singles matches were evenly divided with Siena taking the top three and Holy Cross numbers 4, 5, and 6.
The closest Siena came to a doubles victory was at number one, where senior
co-captain Nikki Mayer and freshman Denisa Hluchova lost 9-7 in a tie breaker.
The Siena pair had a couple of match points in the 15th game with the score
7-6, but were unable to convert.
At the top three singles positions, the Siena women performed exceptionally. Mayer's straight set win at #1, 6-0, 6-1, led the way, followed by #2
Rali Hristova's 6-0, 6-4 triumph at and Hluchova's 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Unfortunately, the bottom half of the Saints' lineuyp didn't fare as well, as
the #'s 4, 5, and 6 all fell in straight sets.
"We played quite well for a team with three freshmen," Jeff Bloomberg, the Siena
Coach commented. "Also, we were missing our regular #4 Betsy Brookins who
just left the hospital after spending three days there with a severe ear
infection. Who knows what the outcome would have been with Betsy in the
lineup. We also neede to work on our doubles which we will do in the next 10
days before our match with Vermont on the 24th."
All in all, Bloomberg said he was quite pleased with his team's performance.
The Saint's next match is on September 24th when they travel to Burlington,
VT to take on UVM.
