JERSEY CITY, N.J. --
Today's semifinals of the 2003 MAAC Men's and Women's Tennis Championship were moved to Saint Peter's College in Jersey City, NJ. The women's semifinals kicked off with Siena defeating Loyola 4-1. The second semifinal is featured Niagara and Marist.
The championship matches will be played Sunday at 11:00am EDT at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
The key to the Saints' victory was a key doubles comeback win by the top tandem of Nikki Mayer and Andrea Disponzio. The duo rallied from deficits of 5-0 and 6-1 to earn an 8-6 victory and swing the momentum of the match.
"That was definitely the key," Head Coach Jeff Bloomberg said following the match. "The team rallied around their comeback and played great tennis to earn a spot in the Championship game."
Mayer and Disponzio also easily won their singles matches and freshman Denis Hluchova clinched the victory with a triumph at #4 singles.
The Siena women will now face either Niagara or Marist in tomorrow's 11 a.m. Championship match. The Saint defeated Marist earlier this month and dropped a close 5-2 decision to top-seeded Niagara.
