Loyola Rallies Past Saints 4-3
April 14, 2012
Siena led Loyola 3-2, but the Greyhounds rallied to take the final two singles matches in three sets and claim a key MAAC win Saturday in Baltimore.
"It was a tough loss, but we must have a short memory," head coach Andy Christodoulou said. "We have Saint Peter's in less than 24 hours. Loyola is a very good team, and we played them evenly across every court. I'm very proud of our ladies."
The Saints' women captured the doubles point, sweeping Loyola as Jasleen Sandhu and Carly Holloway beat Rachel Janasek and Sabrina Fedele, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles, and Cassandra Braz and Jessica Macaluso edged Scarlett Hoy and Judy Lite, 9-7 at the second slot. Nicole Ross and Brittany Filip then got past Tiffany Ash and Jackie Lionetta, 8-6, giving Siena a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles action, the Greyhounds got a pair of points back when Janasek defeated Sandhu in straight sets at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2, and Fedele downed Filip at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1.
Siena evened the match, 2-2, with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, win by Holloway over Hoy at No. 2 singles, and the Saints pulled ahead, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, with a No. 6 win by Elora Benfer over Lionetta.
Trailing by a point, Lite rallied after dropping the first set, 6-7 (4), to beat Macaluso, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4 singles.
Crill won the first set against Ash, 3-6, but the Loyola No. 5 player came back for a 6-4 win in the second. After Lite's victory, the third set of the match was played with the team score tied, 3-3. Ash prevailed, winning 6-4, to clinch the match for the Greyhounds.
