Siena began its annual Spring Break trip with a 5-2 loss to Delaware State in Hilton Head, S.C. Sunday. Brittany Filip and Allysa Singh posted singles victories for the Saints.
"We are playing good tennis, and we won't quit, but the injuries are keeping us from reaching our full potential," Siena head coach Andy Christodoulou said. "Maria (Varano's) injury put us in a hole early today."
The teams started with singles play, and Varano was forced to bow out in the first set of her match at second singles. That meant Siena had to default at second doubled as well.
Filip cruised to a 6-1 and 6-3 win at No. 1 singled, and Singh battled back after dropping the first set for a three-set victory at No. 3 singles. Delaware State won singles 4-6 in straight sets and took all three doubles matches.
Siena returns to action Tuesday in Hilton Head against Davis and Elkins.
