Swimming and Diving Picked to Finish Sixth in MAAC Preseason Poll

Saints pre-ranked one position higher than last year

The Siena women’s swimming and diving team was picked to finish sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) preseason poll, one spot ahead of where they finished in 2011.

“Obviously we would like to be a little bit higher,” third year swimming coach Paul Kueterman said. “But it’s higher than we finished last year, so I think the coaches feel that we’re getting stronger.”

The team graduated only three seniors from last year, and return a squad that is still young. This year’s roster contains only one senior and 14 players who are either freshmen or sophomores.

The main returner for the Saints is lone senior Kaela Bjornberg. A 2012 co-captain broke her own school record finishing second in the 200 breast in the MAAC Championships.

Another swimmer who had success in the 2011 MAAC Championship is sophomore Jacque Medina. The sophomore shattered a 10 year old school record in the 1,000 free, finishing eighth.

The Marist Red Foxes were picked to repeat as MAAC Champions. Nearly every team was ranked in the same position they finished last year. The only exceptions were the Saints pre-ranked one spot higher, and Fairfield University one position lower.

The squad begins their season Friday October 19 at the Catholic Invite, a two day event that will take place at Chestnut Hill, Mass.
