LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Swimming and Diving rising senior Kelsey Helin has been named the 2013-14 Female Walk-on Athlete of the Year by College Swimming & Diving Honors. The Keene, N.H. native was one of just 20 Division I men's and women's swimming and diving athletes, teams, or coaches that were recognized for their outstanding performances during the 2013-14 collegiate swimming and diving season.

"I'm very happy for Kelsey's recognition," said Siena Swimming and Diving Head Coach Paul Kueterman. "She has a great work ethic and had an amazing junior year."

Helin has become one of the Saints' top breaststrokers over her three years with the Saints. She posted the squad's top times this year in placing fourth in the 100 breast (1:06.57) and sixth in the 200 breast (2:25.76) at the MAAC Championships and in the 50 breast win a time of :33.37 against Saint Francis (Pa.)

The open nomination process for the 2013-14 season concluded on April 30. Coaches, athletes and sport administrators submitted nominees for the various awards. In all, hundreds of athletes and/or teams from over 100 institutions were nominated for their achievements. Nominations were then organized into a survey which was voted from April 30 through late May to determine the winners.

"Kelsey emailed me in the fall of 2010 about her interest in swimming at Siena," added Kueterman. "At that time, I thought she could help us and could contribute to the program. With the length of the college season and training, I knew she would drop some time, but her time drops since her freshmen year have been amazing. Every year she's improved on her personal best times and her race finishes at the MAAC Championships."
