LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Swimming and Diving Head Coach Paul Kueterman announced the addition of five to the program. The five additions are Kylie George, Sydney Lautenslager, Shannon Leary, Natalie Valachovic and Cate Zegger.
I’m excited to welcome this class on Siena’s campus,” said Kueterman. “They will bring depth and great talent in the pool and the classroom. They all have had great individual and team success in their swimming careers. I know they will bring that championship experience with them when they join our team in the upcoming school year.”
George makes the short trip to Siena from Scotia-Glenville High School. She is a multi-year New York state qualifier as well as a USA Swimming Eastern Zone qualifier. In 2016, she finished third in the 50 yard freestyle at the NYSPHSAA Section II Championship with a 25.79 time. At the 2015 NYSPHSAA Section II Championship, George took third in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:07.50 time and then followed that up with the silver in 2016.
“Kylie has been very successful at the club and high school swimming level,” Kueterman stated. “She will be a great addition for us in the relays, breaststroke and IM events.”
Victor Swim Club Sportsmanship award winner, Lautenslager comes to Siena from Victor High School. She earned the Most Improved Swimmer and Teammate award for the Victor Swim Club. Lautenslager was an All County selection. At the 2017 Niagara Swimming SCY Championship, she finished fifth in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 17:45.95. She also took ninth in the 1000 yard freestyle as she finished in 10:50.22.
”Sydney has a strong club swimming background and comes from a winning program,” noted Kueterman. “She will make an immediate impact within our program in many events especially the distance events. She’s a very versatile swimmer. I look forward to working with her this upcoming year.”
Multi-year All-Conference swimmer, Leary hails from East Catholic High School. The Manchester, Connecticut native was named to the 2015 Hartford Courant Honorable Mention team. She qualified for the CT Senior Championship for USA Club Swimming. Leary qualified for the finals at the 2015 Connecticut S Championship in both the 100 yard breaststroke and the 500 yard freestyle. She most recently took part in the 2017 Speedo Sectionals - North and took part in both the 100 yard and 200 yard breaststroke.
“Shannon will be a significant addition for us in the distance freestyle and breaststroke events,” said Kueterman. “ She will be a strong competitor at dual meets and the MAAC championships. I look forward to watching her compete.”
Valachovic, like George, comes from Scotia-Glenville High School. She is a multi-year New York State qualifier. At the 2016 NYSPHSAA Section II Championship, she took seventh in the 100 yard freestyle with a 57.24 time. Most recently, she took 13th in the 200 yard freestyle at the 2017 Adirondack Short Course Championship.
“Natalie will be a great contributor to our team in the butterfly and freestyle events,” Kueterman stated. “She will definitely strengthen our relays as well. I look for her to come in and compete immediately in dual meets and at the MAAC championship.”
Multi-year New York State qualifier, Zegger hails from Shaker High School. She took a best fourth place finish at the 2016 NYSPHSAA Section II Championship -Division I in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.19, which stands as her fastest time. She also set her fastest 100 yard freestyle time at the 2016 NYSPHSAA Section II Championship -Division I with a time of 56.91.
“Cate will be a great addition to our sprint freestyle group and help to strengthen our freestyle relays,” noted Kueterman. “Cate has been very successful in high school and I know she will keep improving within her collegiate career.”
The five additions add onto a team that finished seventh at the MAAC Championship and look to return 15.
