LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena swimming captain Colleen McDonough and men's tennis junior Diego Lebron Itoafa have been selected as Siena College's Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month for January. The pair is being honored for their success both in their respective sport and in the classroom.
A native of Staten Island, New York, McDonough is a senior captain for the swim team that competes in both the free and breast style races. As a junior, she finished first in the 200 yard freestyle relay against Vermont with a time of 1:43.66. She was also part of seven relays that finished in the top three as a junior. She helped her team take home the ECAC Championship in 2016. This season, her 200 medley relay team finished fourth at the ECAC Championship, picking up 52 points for the Saints. At the MAAC Championship, the 200 medley relay team finished sixth overall.
McDonough boasts a 3.36 cumulative GPA in actuarial science. She is the women's swimming SAM (Student Athlete Mentors) representative. As a SAM representative she serves as a peer to peer resource to student athletes to prevent substance abuse, help with the transition to college athletics and provide leadership to all student athletes. She has volunteered her time at the Ronald McDonald House cooking meals for families with children in the hospital as well as being involved in many community service initiatives at Siena.
Lebron has played all three years for the Saints. During his first two seasons, he has played in the top three singles spots and top two doubles spots. This season, Lebron is 3-2 overall in singles with a perfect 2-0 MAAC record. He has played all five matches this season in the number five position and is on a one-game winning streak headed into a three-match weekend. He is 4-2 overall in doubles with a 1-1 conference record. When playing in third doubles, he is 4-1, while he is 0-1 at two doubles.
The Guaynabo, Puerto Rican native holds a 2.94 grade point average in marketing and boasted an impressive 3.74 GPA in the fall semester. He is the men's tennis SAM (Student Athlete Mentors) representative. He has volunteered his time at 15-Love, an organization in the Latham area that gives tennis lessons to the youth of the capital district area.
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
