Vermont defeated Siena 173-117 in a women's swimming meet contested at Forbush Natatorium on Wednesday. The loss dropped Siena to 5-3 on the season.
The Catamounts are now 4-8 this season. The four wins by the women's team are the most since 1991-92, when that team won six meets. In addition, the four wins continue the upward climb for the program under four-year head coach Gerry Cournoyer. In 2001-02, the Cats won twice. Last season, they posted three wins.
Leading the way for the Catamounts were junior Kate McCormick (Winooski, Vt.), who won the 100 and 200 breaststroke races, both in personal-best times; classmate Allison Buza (Huntington, Pa.), who won the 100 freestyle and came from behind to win the 200 freestyle as well; junior Hillary Taglienti (Westwood, Mass.), who is nearly 100 percent healthy after a run of injuries, who touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke; sophomore Rebecca Witinok-Huber (Iowa City, Iowa), victorious in the 200 butterfly; and freshman Ali Fowler (Reno, Nev.), capped off the win with a victory in the 200 IM.
