Siena softball head coach Peejay Brun announced the early signing of Greensburg, Pa. native Lauren Shaheen to the Saints' softball team next fall. Shaheen, a talented right-handed pitcher from Hempfield Area High School, should compete for immediate playing time in the Saints' rotation.

"With Tara Campbell leaving us this year, we knew we had to bring in another pitcher who could step right in," Brun said. "I believe Lauren is that player. She is passionate about what she does and her pitching will wow a lot of people."

As a junior last season, Shaheen was a valuable component of Hempfield's Section 1-AAAA Championship team, as she recorded 157 innings pitched, while striking out 256 batters, and registering a staggering 0.89 ERA. In 15 of 22 starts last season, she struck out 10 or more batters and recorded one no-hitter, four one-hitters, and nine shutouts. In a 14-inning marathon game that same year, Shaheen tallied a total of 22 strikeouts. Her sensational season earned her much recognition, as she was named the Tribune Review Player of the Year and was selected to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette 10-player All-Area Team (considering over 125 schools). She was also selected to the WPIAL All-Star team.

Shaheen was also a member of the West Penn Gems Travel team.

The Siena softball team opens its season February 24 in the South Florida Tournament.
