Softball senior Antonia Edwards spent the summers in Washington D.C. as part of Siena's Summer Legal Fellows Program. We had the chance to catch up with her to learn more about the experience.

Q: What was your Summer Legal Fellow experience like?

My Summer Legal Fellow experience was amazing. I was in Washington, D.C. for the first time in my life and I was exposed to many different areas of law. I realized how grateful I am to have people willing to mentor me and help me succeed to achieve my goals.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to go to the Supreme Court to hear major decisions handed down. It is something I will forever cherish. I received valuable advice for my future, and this summer helped reaffirm my desire to become a lawyer.

Q: What kind of work did you do?

I assisted a law professor in updating and preparing syllabi for two upper-level law school courses.

The first course focused on teaching students how to develop professional skills outside the classroom, and the second focused on comparing health care systems around the world.

I researched and collected articles using legal databases, then evaluated and organized materials and drafted written summaries of recommendations. I worked as part of a team to identify the most essential articles for the classes.

Q: How has this experience influenced your career aspirations?

Being around lawyers and law school professors who are passionate about their jobs and seeing them in action was so inspiring. This experience has influenced me to find an area of law I love, and to use my knowledge to help people.

Q: How special is it to have these kinds of opportunities in college where you can stretch your thinking and experience different things?

It is very special to have these types of programs at Siena because this opportunity has allowed me to take the skills I learned in the classroom and apply them to a real life professional work environment.

Having this experience helped me gain confidence for future job opportunities. I sharpened my communication skills and recognized the self-discipline and dedication it takes to be successful.

Q: How did your experience as a student athlete help prepare you for this opportunity?

Being a Siena student athlete has taught me valuable skills that enhanced my summer legal fellows experience. The ability to understand teamwork combined with a strong work ethic and time management skills allowed me to finish my work in a timely manner while still being detail-oriented.

I am appreciative for the support Siena Athletics has provided me. From my teammates and coaches, to the administration, everyone is always pushing me to be the best I can be.
