LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced the 667 student-athletes from 175 programs who received 2017 NFCA Division I All-Region Recognition. MAAC Softball Player of the Year and Siena sophomore Madysen Cossack was named to the Great Lakes Region Third Team. Cossack was one of ten MAAC players named to a team, including two others in the Great Lakes region.
The players are selected from the NFCA’s ten regions and are placed on first, second, or third team. Member coaches vote on players in their district and all players are now eligible for the 2017 NFCA Division I All-American teams. Cossack is just the fourth All-Region honoree in Siena Softball history. Carrie Getz (2003), Sarah Rose (2005), and Shannon Jones (2012) were previously named to All-Region Teams.
Cossack had an incredible year for Siena Softball. The sophomore started every game this season for the Saints and led the team in nearly every statistical category including average (.379), runs (27), hits (53), doubles (15), home runs (10), RBI (45), and total bases (98). Cossack also boasted an on-base percentage of .464 and a slugging percentage of .700 this season. She tied the single season record with 15 doubles and was one RBI short of tying the single season record set in 2005.
The first MAAC Softball Player of the Year from Siena since Shannon Jones was the co-winner in 2012, Cossack finished the season ranked second in the MAAC in batting average, first in slugging percentage, third in on-base percentage, third in RBI, tied for third in home runs, and tied for fourth in total bases.
The Saints won 20 games for the seventh consecutive season this year and set a new program record with 14 conference victories, securing the number two seed in the MAAC Tournament. Siena will return 17 players from this year’s team in 2018.
